We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

ACT Writing Tutoring review by Ralston in Duluth, GA
I continued working on problems with averages with the first student, in addition to reviewing some equation problems. She needs more practice with the average problems as she seems to have some issue with the consecutive number problems and the harder average problems in general. I reviewed word problems with the second student. He particularly needs to pay closer attention to the text when working on the problems (this goes for the first student as well). He would often overlook some key detail in the main part of the question. In general, he performs well with word problems, but needs more review with overlapping group problems. Both students should be reviewing the notes from the session and continue practicing each day. This is key to increasing their scores on the SSAT.

ACT Writing Tutoring review by Ruchita in Duluth, GA
We finished cellular respiration by covering the electron transport chain. We also covered fermentation. We then shifted to plant physiology in which we covered structure of a chloroplast, photosynthesis, i.e., the light and dark reactions: their location and the events that occur with the products formed in each. We covered the concept of carbon fixation, reproduction by flowering plants, i.e., angiosperms, the different male and female components, the concept of pollination, and the development of seed and fruit. Ii the previous topics we have covered the student mentioned she still has apprehensions about meiosis and mitosis, so she is going to read up on this and we've scheduled to review this topic next week!

ACT Writing Tutoring review by Gabrielle in Duluth, GA
We began today's session by discussing the student's first practice essay. She's generally a strong writer with good organization, syntax, and supporting examples, so we won't need to spend too much time reviewing the SAT essay in our future sessions. I did discuss the importance of adding clear, "repetitive" topic sentences and wrap-up sentences to her BPs, and she's going to work on writing the next practice essay in no more than 26-27 minutes. We then moved to math review, covering equation of a line, area of a triangle, triangle angle and side calculations, and other problems. Toward the end of the session, we did a quick quiz of the vocabulary that she learned yesterday, and she was able to remember an impressive number of the new words. We concluded the session with conceptual critical reading questions to contrast with the vocabulary-based critical reading questions we practiced yesterday. She is doing a great job of staying focused through all these practice problems, and I'm already seeing some improvements in speed and confidence. Keep up the hard work!

ACT Writing Tutoring review by Cindy in Duluth, GA
This was a great session to restart the next month of lessons before the student's June SAT. First, we went over his score on the SAT. We will be working on helping the student identify what questions he should be skipping and which he should be attempting. I also asked him how he thought the test went-- he said it felt pretty ordinary like the practices but that he often lost focus. When I'm making him concentrate during the session, he always gets the questions correct-- so I really think he can improve a lot, as long as he stays focused. We did two timed writing sections, went over the answers together (where he got almost all the answers correct on the second try) and did something we did not do previous sessions-- immediately compute his score. From now on, we'll be doing complete sections of math, reading and writing so he can visually see how he is progressing and so we can analyze whether his 'guessing' or skipping is working to his advantage.

ACT Writing Tutoring review by Alyssa in Duluth, GA
Today the student and I went over the topics that we started on last week. We worked on problems which included the following topics: arc length, sector area, the equation of a circle, and the fundamental counting principle. We also went over two questions that dealt with the graphs of f(x)=1/x and exponential growth. The student found the questions to be challenging but felt that she was progressing with her understanding of them. I will email her a link to additional practice questions that she can work on before her test on Saturday.
