SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Adam in Duluth, GA
We went over the practice sections (one of each- critical reading, writing, math, essay) that the student completed for homework. The student answered all of the critical reading questions correctly, even the ones on tone and primary purpose that he had difficulty with when we first started working together. The student only answered one question incorrectly in the writing section, and four in the math. Moreover, the math questions that the student had difficulty with were the last two of the multiple choice and the free response (i.e. the HARDEST questions). We went over how to approach these hard math questions, and the student was able to solve them when I asked leading questions. We next reviewed his essay, which I would grade around a 5. Because his essay was very well written, I decided to focus more on word choice and sentence structure. I pointed out weak verbs and awkward phrases that the student could revise, as to construct a more concise and easier to read sentence. I was very pleased to see the student incorporate last week's essay tips I shared with him into this new essay, such as constructing strong topic and conclusion sentences. For next week, the student will complete a full length self-proctored SAT exam.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Catherine in Duluth, GA
The student did a great job with the practice sections she prepared for today's session. I am so pleased to hear that our sessions were helpful to the student on her AP Language test. In math, we reviewed circles. To help the student distinguish between the equations for a circle's area and circumference, we discussed that because area is a two dimensional concept, it must include radius squared. The student is becoming quicker and more confident at mapping SAT problems. Verbalizing and rewriting key information helps the student to take the problems step by step. I am really looking forward to seeing how the student applies mapping on the full-length, timed practice SAT she takes this Saturday (pages 643-682). In writing, we revisited dangling modifiers. This is one of the few grammatical concepts that the student continues to miss on improving the sentence questions. The student and I worked on applying our SAT preparation to the ACT English section. The student answered 13/15 correctly on her first English passage. If she maintained that level over all five of the English passages, she could expect a 28 for her English score. Next week, we will score the student's practice SAT and work in more depth on ACT math, reading, and science.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Matthew in Duluth, GA
Today we honed in on math and then reviewed the skills we had learned last week with vocabulary and passages. We used the math section I had assigned for homework. I used the math problems she had difficulty on to review more math concepts. This kind of review seemed to help as I first explained the concept, illustrated with an example, and then had her practice a new problem. We talked about probability, geometry, percents, number lines, and other concepts using this method. We moved on to cover the vocabulary and reading skills we had developed last week. I noted particular improvement in the ability to summarize a hard passage.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Joseph in Duluth, GA
Today the student and I moved on to the Writing Section of the SAT exam. We ran through Improving Sentences practice problems for the majority of our session, and focused both on strategies to eliminate bad answers and strategies to remain calm when confronted with a difficult problem. We spent time breaking down sentences and talking about common errors the SAT expects one to identify. These included subject-verb agreement, preposition use, tense agreement, pronouns and antecedents, and what I called "too many words" answers. She became better at identifying what the questions were trying to ask her, though this is a section of the test I would like to continue focusing on. I assigned her more Improving Sentences questions for homework, as well as a few exercises at the beginning of the Improving Sentences chapter in her SAT prep book.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Doron in Duluth, GA
The student and I worked on the math section of the SAT. We did so by reviewing his answers from section 2 and 4 from practice exam 6. The student had a good grasp of the material we covered. For this lesson, we covered several concepts, but the big ones dealt with properties of triangles, square units, breaking down word problems, and checking work.
