Sara

Certified Tutor

In 2017, I graduated summa cum laude from the Liberty University School of Education. During my college career, I gained experience in both classroom and individual tutoring settingsI have worked one-on-one with students from middle school through adulthood, and tutored a wide variety of subjects, but I specialize in helping students succeed in language classes such as Spanish and English-related areas such as writing, literature, and standardized test prep. After receiving my Bachelor of Arts in English and Spanish education, I took a long-term substitute position as a Spanish teacher at The Covenant School in Charlottesville, Virginia, where I taught Spanish I and II. My teaching style focuses on individualized instruction that works for each studentI prefer to know my students' interests, learning styles, and goals so that I can tailor my instructional approach to match them. My favorite part of tutoring is the "Now I get it!" moment, when a student finally grasps a concept that he or she has been struggling with. When I am not teaching, tutoring, or lesson planning, I enjoy reading, writing book reviews, running, and spending time with friends.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Education should develop students' character, teach them to apply logic and reasoning to a variety of problems, and provide them with the skills and knowledge they need to achieve their future aspirations. To accomplish this goal, teachers should use instructional methods that will interest students and help them to remember and apply the content. Students must be challenged to evaluate information, summarize it, and clearly communicate well-reasoned thoughts about it. Teachers and tutors should intentionally integrate activities that build teamwork, critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills to prepare students for the workforce or higher education.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session, I would assess the student's individual skill level in order to tailor my instruction to his or her personal needs. Then, I would discuss what goals the student and his or her parents had for the tutoring sessions and develop a plan for achieving those goals.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

In my personal experience, slowly giving students greater and greater personal responsibility for learning helps them to become independent learners. For example, if a student had poor reading comprehension, we would study the content together in the second tutoring session. I would model good reading techniques, explain how to do it and why, and have the student copy me. In future sessions, the student would slowly be encouraged to apply these skills more and more until he or she had mastered them.
