Online HSPT Tutoring review by Carolyn
We reviewed a bit from last time, focusing on arithmetic with negative numbers and her vocabulary words for this week. Then we went over spelling rules and did some practice exercises. Then we talked about reading comprehension strategies and did some practice.

The student completed another timed math section, saw much improvement with his test taking skills. Accuracy and understanding are also much better. Practice test is this weekend, so I told him to practice as much as possible from both books before then. Worked with the student some more on SAT Math. Told him to do as many more problems as she could before we meet again Thursday and bring any questions he may have for me at that time.

I explained some HSPT test-taking strategies to the student and then gave him a diagnostic quiz to see what areas he needed to work on. We started with the verbal skills section, and I taught him some useful strategies for narrowing down answer choices and guessing the meaning of words he doesn't know. We also made a list of words he doesn't know so I could make him some vocabulary flashcards to study in future sessions. By the end of the lesson, he was getting many more questions right and seemed to be thinking more carefully about his answer choices.

Today was our first lesson. We began with a review of the test structure, then jumped into the math section. The student has very strong simple math skills that will help her greatly on the math section. Over the next few sessions we will work through the harder math topics. Next we moved to the Language Skills section. We will practice ways to identify errors that don't immediately stand out.

Reviewed adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions. Worked on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals. Next week we'll work more on long division.

Today we went over the verbal section the student did for homework, and we went through a language section and part of a mathematics section. I am having him finish the mathematics section for homework. Math seems to be his strength, so we will focus more on language than anything else as we prepare for his exam, but we will hit every subject at least a little bit.

51Թ can find you a skilled High School Placement Tests (HSPT) tutor who can help your child prepare for their upcoming exam. Since your child only has the option of taking this standardized examination once, it is essential to provide them with the academic support they need to maximize their study efforts.

The HSPT is a placement test and admissions exams some schools require for students who want to enroll in private or independent high school. The test is usually administered by the schools to which students are applying, so you will need to check with local schools to find out when they will be giving the test and register for the HSPT with them. The cost of the exam is included with a school's registration fee, which will vary by the academic institution.

What can HSPT tutoring cover?

There are three HSPT testing variations; Closed HSPT, Open HSPT, and Pre-HSPT. The Closed HSPT is a standardized exam that is issued annually. Exams are centrally scored, and testers receive a substantial amount of scoring data. The Open HSPT is sold to individual schools, and scoring student exams are the responsibility of each school. Some schools may use the same exam for several years in a row. The Pre-HSPT is an exam typically given to 7th-grade students and scored by the testing company. It is often used as a practice assessment. Regardless of which of these exams your student will be facing, a skilled HSPT tutor can help them maximize their test preparation efforts.

The HSPT contains five different sections; Verbal Skills, Quantitative Skills, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, and Language. Depending on the school at which your child will be taking their exam, optional sections may include Science and Religion. However, these additional sections if they offered are not included in the composite score.

The Verbal Skills section of the exam has questions related to reading, social studies, and language. During this portion of the HSPT, your student's ability to perform language-based reasoning tasks will be evaluated. Some of the specific items they will need to familiar with include synonyms, antonyms, analogies, vocabulary, and verbal logic. During your child's private sessions, their instructor may provide samples of tasks to help them become more familiar with the format of the exam. This can make it easier for a student to remain calm on test day and approach each question with confidence.

The Quantitative Skills portion of the test will have questions related to science, math, and related subject areas. Your student's ability to complete quantity and number based reasoning tasks will be evaluated. Some of the specific topics your child may need to review as they prepare for this portion of the exam include geometry, arithmetic, and algebra. Specific skills a private instructor can help them review include a comparison of geometric objects, number manipulation, patterns, and sequences. During your student's time with their private instructor, they may work on solving specific problem types. The instructor can work through problems and provide samples and correct any issues in real-time, so points of confusion are quickly identified and addressed.

During the Reading section of the HSPT, your child will need to read selected passages and answer questions based on understanding the meaning of words and phrases in the context of the reading passage, through inference, and general reading comprehension skills such identifying the main idea.

As part of the Mathematics section of the test, your child will be expected to solve problems and answer questions that demonstrate their proficiency with arithmetic operations, reasoning skills, and various math concepts.

During the Language portion of the HSPT, your student's skill in using standard English conventions will be measured. This can include punctuation, composition, grammar, and spelling.

How can an HSPT tutor help my child?

The HSPT evaluates the knowledge your child is expected to have accumulated throughout the entirety of their elementary and middle school years. Private HSPT tutoring can address any specific knowledge gaps or offer your child a comprehensive overview of the material they are likely to encounter as part of their exam.

As your child made their way through their academic classes, the skills learned in previous years was taken for granted by their current teachers. When your child was introduced to multiplication, it was assumed they were able to complete addition problems. When they began expanding their vocabulary each year, it was assumed they had a firm grip on the words from the previous years. If any of those skills that were taken for granted were missing or not fully developed, your child might need to review those areas more extensively to perform at their best on test day.

In a classroom setting, it is difficult for teachers to get to know each of their students. It's almost impossible for even the best teachers to get to know each student and create custom learning solutions for them based on their specific academic needs. When your child works with professional HSPT tutors, they receive individualized instruction and the undivided attention of the instructor.

A personal instructor can take the time to get to know your child. They have the opportunity to discover your child's learning style, academic strengths, academic weaknesses, learning goals, and personal interests. This information can then be used to create a custom program of study that is designed to allow your child to maximize their study efforts. Since the instructor is only teaching your child during their study session, they can customize how content is delivered to be more compatible with your child's learning style. In a classroom setting instructional delivery typically relies on direct delivery of information through a lecture or presentation. When working individually with your child, their private instructor can bring in other instructional modalities that may make it easier for your child to engage with the learning material and make it more academically accessible to them.

As your student progresses in their studies, what they need to focus on will change. Since their instructor is working directly with them, sessions can be modified to reflect the new learning goals quickly. There is no reason your child should be stuck reviewing concepts and skills they have mastered as part of their HSPT review.

There is no reason to try to cobble together HSPT study materials for your child to review on their own. This can lead to wasted time spent reviewing familiar skills and unintentionally overlooking essential skills that your child may be missing. Experienced HSPT tutors are familiar with the format of the exam as well as the content on the various sections. They can help your child quickly identify problem areas and offer them the tools and support they need to work towards their scoring goals.

How can my child get started with HSPT tutoring?

51Թ can connect you with skilled HSPT tutors who can work with your child in person or remotely via our online Live Learning Platform. Regardless of which method you choose, your child will receive the same individualized instruction.

Each format allows your child to work with their personal HSPT instructor face-to-face. With the in-person option, they can meet at your home, in a local library, or any other convenient public venue. When your child works with an instructor remotely, they can log in to the system from anywhere they have a reliable internet connection and their digital device. Whether they need to sign on after practice using their school's wife or at home while dinner is being prepared, their sessions are always just a click away. When they enter the Live Learning Platform, they will see their HSPT instructor just as if they were seated across from them. They can interact in real time and receive their instruction and feedback in real time.

The main difference between working with HSPT tutors in-person or online is in instructor availability. Most people initially begin looking for academic support through local advertisements and word of mouth. This tends to lead to frustration. 51Թ has an extensive network of HSPT instructors we can connect you with. However, if you are willing to have your child work with instructors remotely, you will have a greater number of options from which to choose.

Remote instructors are located throughout the country across time zones. This can be advantageous for students in two ways. If your child has a packed schedule and needs sessions later in the evening or early in the morning before class, an instructor in a different time zone may be able to more easily accommodate this request. Similarly, if it's important that your child attend their sessions as soon as school is out, it can be easier to find a skilled private instructor to work with who lives in a time zone where their local students are still in school.

If you're ready to give your child the academic support they need to work towards their HSPT scoring goals, the experts at 51Թ are eager to help. Contact us today to get started.
