Bethany

Certified Tutor

As an English major at Liberty University, I have thrived in learning not just about literature, but also about seeing how literature related to specific periods in history. I have tutored middle school, high school, and college students in various subjects: English, reading comprehension, critical thinking, History (both U.S. and European), writing (both MLA & APA format), as well as edited legal writing papers and nursing school papers. I thrive on helping students connect with a subject, to help them reach the "light bulb" moment. I am passionate about helping students understand concepts in a way that will make sense to them and not just simply write in the correct answer. I want to help develop a love for learning and a desire to understand a subject as a whole, not as an isolated event or term. Breaking down material to better understand the essence of a subject is one of my strengths, as I want to give students a strong foundation in order to build off the information they feel confident in. I relate well to students and believe that getting to know a student on a personal basis makes it easier to assist them in their studies. I also like to help students realize and understand that their studies are not just confined to the classroom, and I try to draw in real life applications in order to help them grasp the importance and relevance of what they are learning about. In the age of texting and casual email, I feel it is important for students to have the confidence to write a well structured paper or essay so that, even if the subject itself is a challenge, they will be confident in knowing how to write comprehensively and succinctly.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that students learn the best by engaging with material through discussion and being able to see life applications in the material being covered. Students should be encouraged and challenged by teachers and tutors alike to think beyond just the printed text and analyze the information they receive to make a connection between their education and their life.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would want to get to know the student first and find out what exactly they are struggling with in a particular subject. In a first session, I would like to see how they approach the subject and then offer feedback on how they can approach and tackle the subject. Since time is precious, the first session should address the issues they are having in the subject, but also allow for some interaction between tutor and student in order to build a working relationship.
