7th Grade Tutoring FAQ

For many students, seventh grade can feel like a bit of a slump. It typically lacks the excitement that sixth graders experience when first transitioning to the middle school environment, and it does not include the eager anticipation of beginning high school that accompanies eighth grade studies. It can be easy for students to lose focus at this point in their middle school education, especially if they struggle with or outpace one of their classes.

Seventh grade typically involves classes in math, language arts, history, science, a selection of electives, and potentially the beginning of formal study of a foreign language. Given this wide breadth of subject matter, it is easy to see how students can encounter difficulties in understanding the subject material in one or more of their classes. In addition to the breadth of topics seventh grade covers, students may struggle with the type and pace of instruction they receive. Perhaps they learn material faster than the pace at which one of their classes presents it, but they have trouble keeping up in another class. Perhaps another class is difficult for them because the way in which their instructor presents the material doesn't mesh well with their personal learning style.

Today we started with the student's math homework. We did a few probability problems about coin tosses. He grasped the concept of solving them after the first problem. We then spent some time reviewing his progress with his missing assignments. He informed me that many were completed. We looked at powerschool and made a new list for each course of the missing or late assignments the student still needs to make up. He made reminders in his assignment notebook and seemed proud that the number had decreased.

We discussed details leading up to the Revolutionary War and features needed for a biography. We then practiced basic algebra and grammar exercises.

The student and I worked on writing, vocabulary, and math. I talked to her about writing chapter summaries, and we went over vocabulary together. After this, I had her do a word problem. The book she was reading seemed a bit hard for a 7th grader, but she seemed to enjoy it. The challenge is to get her to write complete and thorough chapter summaries. Finally, we did the math problem out of a work book. I asked her to finish reading the chapter and to write her chapter summary.
