ACCUPLACER Sentence Skills Tutoring FAQ

What is ACCUPLACER? According to its official site, ACCUPLACER is a series of tests that quickly, accurately, and efficiently assesses reading, writing, math, and computer skills. From there, a student's scholastic strengths and weaknesses are underlined in these tests. Colleges and universities use the ACCUPLACER assessment in order to gauge the abilities and skill levels of incoming students and then place them in appropriate first semester courses. So why is this so important? If you are about to begin your initial semester at a higher-learning institution that uses the Sentence Skills section of the ACCUPLACER test, it is important that you prepare to demonstrate all of the grammar knowledge you have gained throughout your many years of primary and secondary education on exam day. Not familiarizing yourself with the section's specific format and question types could be costly, and could result in you being assigned to a course much too easy for your skill level. Not brushing up on your rusty grammar rules could also be detrimental. Going about these tests nonchalantly and half-prepared could hinder your intellectual development and the completion of your degree.

Personal ACCUPLACER Sentence Skills tutoring can help you to approach your exam with confidence. No matter what aspects of English grammar that most confuse you, ACCUPLACER Sentence Skills tutoring can provide you with targeted assistance to help you master the particular concepts that give you difficulty. Each ACCUPLACER Sentence Skills tutor knows all of the ins and outs of the assessment, and is talented at sharing his or her understanding of English grammar with others. Even so, the 51Թ' educational directors can help you hand select the tutor best suited to help you. Tutors are picked based on your experience, unique set of strengths and weaknesses, your concerns, and even your preferred learning style and personality. Then, your tutor can analyze your current grammar knowledge and craft a customized series of lesson plans to help you shore up any gaps in your knowledge and augment your weakest skills. The individualized, one-on-one nature of private tutoring means that as soon as you have a question about the material, you can have it answered quickly and effectively. You can also feel free to work at whatever pace that best allows you to learn and grasp the material. If you need to spend more time on mastering a particular grammar rule while breezing through concepts you already understand, you can do so due to the inherent structure of your sessions.

Online ACCUPLACER Sentence Skills Tutoring review by Allison
The student and I finished the math and reading comprehension portions of the practice test, and revised the second essay I asked him to write. His essay was well-organized and written, but we improved it by expanding on one of his body paragraphs to include more details that clarified and strengthened his story. I also worked with him at adding an introductory sentence to lead into his thesis, which he did very nicely. I asked him to re-write the essay for homework with his changes included, focusing on handwriting (spacing out words and paragraphs) while doing so. Next time, we will focus on math drills and timed practice problems. He is able to complete the reading comprehension passages with good accuracy in the right amount of time.

Because this was the student's first session, we started by discussing his needs and priorities with respect to the assessment. Because he knows he will need to take the English tests, we started off with Sentence Skills. Using examples from the prep book for practice we found examples of punctuation and grammar he found most challenging and reviewed them. His greatest areas of challenge are grammatical errors that are commonly accepted in conversational speech, like the use of they to refer to a singular subject. With that in mind we talked about the distinction between conversational English and formal written English. In addition, we analyzed the particular points of difficulty he had. In preparation for our next session, I asked him to choose some reading material that corresponds to his interests, so that he has some additional correspondence to his reading skills, since we will be working on the Reading Comprehension assessment next.

For our last session, the student and I reviewed several practice problems. He was able to solve all of them quickly and easily. His skills have developed significantly since our first session, and that alone is a reason to be proud, but I have full confidence that he will pass his exam on Thursday with flying colors! Good luck!

I had a fantastic first session with the student! We focused on the ELA portion of the test, since that is coming up in about two weeks, and the math portion will be at the end of April. We read a non-fiction passage and a fiction passage together, and we worked on some multiple choice questions and an open-ended question. We talked about the passages as we read through them, and the student is clearly a strong reader and has great ideas. Her ideas are often too general or too vague, though, so we worked on making more specific statements in her writing. Her test taking skills are excellent, and she is quite adept at looking back into the passages to find evidence to support her answer choices. I left her a long open-ended question to work on for homework. Overall, the session went really well, and I am going to enjoy working with the student!
