We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

Today, we worked mostly on an assignment he has due Monday in summer school. We then completed a rough draft and second draft. He also did a good job of working on the novel and character lists, along with obscure vocabulary.

Today I was able to see the student write some sentences. I took words from our Civil War book and we defined them and he wrote them into several sentences. He has good ideas for sentences; he has good handwriting and he is a good speller. We read some more from our Civil War book, and we developed some more vocabulary. He is going to try a popular middle school novel I gave him, and also read some other Civil War material I left for him.

I met with the student today and we discussed his summer reading. He was a bit confused on how to annotate. I looked through the assignment and condensed the annotations into a Question, Comment, and Connection method (QCC). I then had him incorporate the other elements the school is having him look at. It seemed to help. However, I noticed that he was having trouble with figurative language. I worked with him on this and then I worked with him on sentence structure. I gave him the four sentence types: Simple, complex, compound, and compound-complex. Then I had him give me examples of them. He did well and we settled on him annotating 20 pages a day.

1st session. Spoke with the student and discussed what kinds of things are giving him trouble in language arts. He told me reading comprehension, writing, vocab and grammar. Next we went over vocab words to judge what grade level he is at, and worked on grammar worksheets and reading.

Online 10th Grade Reading Tutoring review by Peter
I spent a little bit of time getting to know the student, talking about her interests in history and literature, and learning about her strengths and weaknesses academically. She was able to inform me of the method of assessment her course uses, and we talked about strategies for writing a really solid essay. This gave us the opportunity to talk about essays not just in her European History class but also in her Literature class, where they are discussing "Jane Eyre," especially as it relates to its context in 19th-century Victorian England. We did some practice writing (timed), and went over the results and discussed how she might improve that particular passage to make it ready for submission for a grade.
