I went over parts of speech with the student (i.e., nouns, nominative, objective, and possessive pronouns, adjectives and adverbs). I wanted him to develop skill in identifying subjects and verbs, adjectives and adverbs tonight. We worked on four work sheets I constructed to help him hone his grammar. He has made substantial progress as the first night we met he was not able to identify nouns or verbs.

The student and I continued to read and annotate "Night." We discussed important quotations as well -- He has good reading comprehension and is able to understand and explain themes, symbols, and motifs. We also practiced for his vocabulary test that he is taking this week using an ACT vocab text.

I taught the students about conjugating verbs. We reviewed the meanings of the first-, second- and third-person, both singular and plural, then conjugated a few simple verbs using a chart for all of the possible subject pronouns. We then focused on the irregular verb 'to be'. I used 'to be' to illustrate the past and present tenses. For homework, I assigned two workbook pages on 'to be'. We finished by reviewing the stories in their reading workbook that I had assigned for homework; I read one aloud so they could practice paying attention.

The student and I did 45 minutes of English. We annotated a song for his homework and used it to talk about rhetorical devices and how form can have meaning separate from substance. We then did 45 minutes of error IDs for SAT. We went over some grammatical concepts and then did practice questions.

The student had already completed most of an outline template for her persuasive essay. We completed the template and then worked on revising it, with a focus on the ways in which the outline predicts a specific structure and its parts. She is making progress towards visualizing structural components in a way that abets organization in her writing. She continues to make dramatic advances in the selection, implementation and development of details and examples.

The student is going to be focusing on homework during our sessions from now on. For this Thursday's session, we worked on a homework packet, half of which is due Friday. The topics covered included independent versus dependent clauses, adverbial/adjectival/noun clauses, parts of speech, and phrases. He grasped the concepts well after we reviewed his answers. I believe that he will benefit greatly from structured homework sessions.
