Certified Tutor

I graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a BS in Education, a Masters in English Education and a Masters in Public Health. I have taught 3rd grade, 7th grade communications, college writing and literature. While working on my MEd, I studied under Dorothea Watson for two years (she continued to mentor me for many years after my completed degrees). Dr. Watson developed Miscue Analysis. Miscue analysis involves a running record that is used to identify difficulties faced by students when they read. I have successfully applied Miscue Analysis to elementary, middle school, and high school students' reading From 2011-2020 I created and managed a college prep service in the San Francisco Bay Area. I had 40 students per week in San Ramon California. I prepared and assisted students in writing their college application essays and taking the SAT and ACT. The majority of my students' families spoke English as a second language. 68% of my students were admitted to prestigious colleges and universities and 54% received academic scholarships. The world we live in is constantly changing and transitioning. Over the past couple of years we have lived through some abrupt changes and a true paradigm shift. It is imperative to know yourself and how you learn and work best so you are able to adjust, be resilient, resourceful and thrive. What you know does not benefit you or others unless you are able to effectively communicate your knowledge. In our first session we will get to know each other and set goals. I always have fun with my students. Having fun while learning, at any level, expedites the learning process. I enjoy building a strong rapport with my students. I expect transparent communication. I am passionate about all forms of communication and learning for the purpose of understanding. I am a proponent of education and believe it to be absolutely necessary for a quality life. In my free time I enjoy reading, writing, swimming, traveling and learning new hobbies and activities.
