In 4th grade as a child in North East Indiana I had my first opportunity to tutor. I tutored a fellow peer who needed assistance in mathematics. This was my introduction into tutoring and educating others. This experience taught me how to be more empathetic to the varied learning styles of others. It also taught me that encouragement and positive reinforcement can go a long way with an individual that might be struggling with subject matter.
To give a brief background in all of the things I was involved in, throughout all of elementary, middle school and high school, I enjoyed being parts of academic bowls, language clubs, spelling teams, science clubs that competed, took part in mentoring programs near the end of high school, and also was the president of the mayor's youth advisory council in my hometown. Lastly, I also worked at a TaeKwonDo Leadership Excellence Academy for 5 years as an instructor teaching students martial arts, life skills and character building. I carried much of this ability to lead, assist and serve others into my undergraduate years in college.
I attended Indiana University - Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) in Fort Wayne Indiana. In May of 2015, I received my bachelors of arts in Women's and Gender Studies with a minor in sociology. Before I graduated, I also held a position on the IPFW campus as the LGBTQ+ Resource Center, which included assisting LGBTQ+ students with resources, event planning, as well as community building on and off the campus.
Following my graduation in May of 2015, I received employment with the University of Michigan- Dearborn in Dearborn, Michigan and worked as their LGBTQ+ & Inclusion coordinator. I was tasked with educating folks on campus about how to be better allies to the LGBTQ+ community, aided students with resources, planned both LGBTQ+ & Inclusion programming for the campus, worked/partnerned with community agencies and co-lead an emerging leaders group of students. A wide variety of my programming focused on educating students about how to be better leaders, in addition to educating folks about a wide variety of social issues.
All of my experience is not exclusive to tutoring, however, I have a plethora of experience in teaching students life skills and character building, as well as inserting educational lessons into fun programming events at the collegiate level.
I carry this spirit of learning into anything and everything that I do. Educating others about a wide variety of topics is something that I am very passionate about. I thoroughly enjoy encouraging and working with students to help them meet their academic goals, and assist with empowering them and building their self-esteem to aid them in their learning.
Thanks for taking the time to read my personal statement and I look forward to working with you to meet your academic goals!
