In 2013, I graduated magna cum laude from Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA. While at Westminster, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a dual major in Criminal Justice Studies. While in school I found that the application of knowledge is just as important as classroom exercises. In biology, I was able to apply concepts from textbooks in an ecological study that attempted to control an invasive species by manipulating nutrient availability. Similarly, I volunteered to teach a sociology course in a female correctional facility. These experiences helped me apply theories learned in the classroom. As a result, I am familiar with abstract theories as well as concrete examples that may better explain them to a student.
After I completed my undergrad, I tutored for a year and applied to graduate programs. I attended the University of Chicago and completed their Master of the Arts Program in the Social Sciences (MAPSS). I graduated from Chicago in 2015. Since then I have worked as a writer and editor for an education tech company. I have specialized in writing guides for standardized tests as well as mathematic and science based subjects.
I have tutored many students in math. I am a proponent of this skill because of its use in the natural and physical sciences. Math—including algebra and calculus—is an important skill that can be practically applied to everyday circumstances. My enthusiasm for the subject is contagious and this helps the learning process.
I majored in biology with a focus in ecology. I was a TA in the Biology Department for most of my college career. Additionally, I conducted an independent study over the course of three semesters. This ecological based investigation monitored whether or not an invasive plant species could be controlled by the manipulation of nutrient availability, mainly nitrogen and phosphorus. These experiences have helped me to better understand concepts related to these subjects. Similarly, this experience has provided a basis for my tutoring abilities: tutoring requires similar skills to those I learned as a TA.
My qualifications for anthropology and sociology stem from prior teaching and research experience. First, I taught sociology of the family to a class of inmates at a Pennsylvania correctional facility. This may sound intimidating; however, the experience provided me with invaluable teaching knowledge. My class had a variety of educational and interest levels. This meant that the curriculum and teaching style had to be fluid in order to make the content understandable for each student. This has taught me how to tailor the delivery of information for students because each person's learning style is unique. Second, I have applied my knowledge in the social sciences to research on both the college and graduate levels. A strong foundation in research provides a wealth of information regarding the application of theory, which can illustrate difficult concepts to students in a relatable manner.
I have a variety of research and teaching experience. I am enthusiastic and ready to teach. If you have trouble in high school or college course feel free to seek my assistance. I will be happy to help!
