Hello everyone:

My name is Barry. I have been teaching mathematics on and off since 1970. I have a passion for teaching math. You might say that I love math. I have a BA degree in Math and an MS degree in Math Education, both from Lehman College. I worked for Honeywell International for 25 years. Half on my time at Honeywell, I was a technical trainer, teaching programming courses and operating system courses. I taught customers in the United States and from different countries. The other half of my time, I was a software test engineer. I retired from Honeywell in 2003.

In 2003, I joined Everest College Phoenix. I teach math both on ground and online. In 2015, I joined Brown Mackie College and Grand Canyon University. In November, I will be married to my lovely wife, Sharon, for 47 years. I have two sons, Andrew and Mathew. Andrew is an oncologist. He is married and has two children, Benjamin and Lexie, who are 13 and7 years old, respectively. My younger son, Mathew, is an aspiring pharmacist with an MS degree in Psychology. Both Andrew and Mathew graduated from the University of Arizona for their undergraduate education. We have two cats, Pebbles and Sprinkles. I am looking forward to working with you this term.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Teaching is the process by which a teacher helps other students learn. It is one of our most important activities. Teaching helps people gain the knowledge and attitudes they need to be responsible citizens. A variety of methods should be used in teaching. For example, teachers sometimes guide their students individually and sometimes as a group. When guiding as a group, Audio-Visual materials should be used when appropriate. A teacher should give written or oral tests to their students to help evaluate student progress. The teacher analyzes the test results of all the students in the group, and determines which students need special help and decides what kind of special help they need. The teacher can also judge the effectiveness of his or her teaching methods and materials. The teacher should set a good example for his or her students. Teachers often help students more by their example than they do in any other way. One of the most important ways that teachers set an example is by showing such qualities as patience, understanding, trustworthiness, and attention to work. Students who see these qualities in their teachers may be encouraged to develop similar qualities in themselves. In addition, students are more likely to cooperate with a teacher whom they respect and admire and so are more likely to benefit from the teacher's help. Teachers should state their aim or goal that is to be accomplished by the students. The stated objectives should be met by the students in accomplishing the aim or goal. The teacher should work out several examples with the students and then give the students similar examples to solve. These examples are then gone over by the teacher and students. The lesson is summarized and a homework assignment is given to reinforce student learning. The homework assignment will be gone over at the beginning of the next lesson. One of a teacher's greatest rewards is to see his or her students succeed at their studies and develop into productive, responsible citizens.
