What is your teaching philosophy?

Education must be fun. Never feared; only appreciated.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I get to know the student, conduct a pre-test, grade the test, look at correct answers, and evaluate incorrect decisions. I always ask the student where the subject seems hard.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I offer proofreading. I learn where they study and what time they spend on other classes.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would show them how getting it right feels.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Explore and break down the area of difficulty. Explore tricks to memorization; make the subject real.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Talk to them to find out why they think they're having trouble. I look at past concepts that were not understood and find out what, when, and why something was difficult.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Make it relevant to what they enjoy doing.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Evaluate past tests that are available, see if they are clicking with the teacher, and be sure they are getting excited.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Reward positively based on their performance.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Read aloud and have them explain what they have read. I also use pretests and posttests.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Post and pre-tests from my files. Videos from the difficult areas, timelines, taking handouts, and vocabulary exercises.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Experimenting with exploring the paragraphs and breaking down these areas to outlines and vocabulary.
