I love English, and good writing. Since I like working one-or-one or with a small group, tutoring is a great way for me to help young people communicate more effectively in writing. As a social scientist, I also like to talking about statistics and social science. I like to teach by example and ask lots of questions so students can discover answers themselves. When not working, I like to watch movies, exercise, and write science fiction.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I like to teach by providing examples, asking questions, and walking students through practical exercises.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Let me use writing as an illustration. I would begin by asking questions about the areas that challenge the student. Do they struggle to select a good thesis statement and organize their thoughts? Are they having specific problems with word choice and sentence structure?

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

One thing I think can help many students is to help them identify a personal interest where they could also practice, for example, essay writing or scientific thinking.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Positive reinforcement helps everyone. Beginning students tend to need more encouragement. I might look for examples that overlap with the student's personal interests.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Often, a student failed to learn a concept they need to understand the topic under discussion. I can back up a step or two and coach them on whatever they seem to have missed.
