How can you help a student become an independent learner?
The best way for a student to become an independent learner is for them to become accountable for their learning. This means that they must own their difficulties as well as their strengths and admit where they may need help. I will help each student realize their potential and acknowledge that they can do it on their own, without someone guiding them. This happens over time as a student's confidence builds in a subject matter.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
The strongest motivation is intrinsic. I would help a student find that flame within themselves that has kept them going in the past. I would explain to them that it is normal to lose motivation but that it is also very possible to regain it. I would ask the student about their long-run and short-run goals, as being reminded of those can often help boost confidence.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Each student has a different learning style. Generally, if a student does not understand a skill or concept, it is because they do not comprehend the way it is being explained. I would try to have the student think about the problem or concept in a different way than how they were previously looking at it.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would have them explain the problem or concept to me, as teaching someone else often demonstrates true mastery of the topic. I would also have them try solving different problems than ones they may already be familiar with.
