Certified Tutor

For the last five years, I split my time between working remotely in the jungles of Thailand and Myanmar as a volunteer instructor, and working as a global traveling teacher for Rustic Pathways, a teen travel company. My time in Southeast Asia ignited a strong passion for empowering people through education, and for providing access to education for all people. Last summer I worked in the sugarcane fields of the Dominican Republic, teaching English and basic public health initiatives to children and adults alike who often didn't even know how to read and write their own name. Living and working outside the United States made me acutely aware of the privilege I had growing up in a country where education was not only available, but expected for all children growing up. It is my mission as a teacher to provide the best chance for not only academic success for students, but to empower them with knowledge to propel themselves towards who they are to become. I have worked with students ranging in age from four to 52, and have only grown in my love of seeing someone progress in their understanding of the world about them, and seeing them improve upon skills and concepts they previously wouldn't have thought possible to attain.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

You have to find out what motivates a student. Find a way to make it relatable if possible. Approach a subject from different angles, and break it down until the student begins to understand it.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

A combination of methods can test a student's comprehension, including small tests, comprehension checking questions, short written responses, and small projects.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Start with manageable goals and sections of material. Once a student grasps a small part of the material, build upon that, and continue to provide positive reinforcement along the way.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Ascertain their learning styles and academic strengths and weaknesses. You can do this through conversation, as well as through small placement quizzes.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Pay attention to what teaching and learning methods work best for helping the student succeed.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Every student, regardless of race, ethnicity or nationality, deserves access to education and quality instructors.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Ascertain what their learning style is and where their strengths and weaknesses are in both subject matter and academic discipline.
