Certified Tutor

I am currently an undergraduate student at Grand Canyon University. I am majoring in History for Secondary Education, and have taught a wide range of students from elementary school to adults. Understanding that everyone has a different learning style is extremely important, and you have to be willing to adapt to integrate those learning styles.

In my spare time, I enjoy anything outdoors. I love to fish and go camping, and also spend time practicing my wildlife and landscape photography.

I have two wonderful children and a very supportive husband. My family has been a very important factor in my life and they are my most valued support system.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have found that adapting teaching styles to better facilitate different learning styles works best. Every student learns in a different way, and you have to be willing to shift your teaching style to help them gain the most information from the subject they are trying to learn.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I understand that students learn in different ways and at a different pace. No student is the same. Adapting teaching styles to better meet the needs of the way a student learns is extremely beneficial to them. I also believe that short term goals need to be set, and once met they need to be celebrated. This gives the student a sense of pride and ownership in their accomplishment. The most important thing is to keep a student engaged and excited about what they are learning. This will help them to retain information and gain more from the subject matter.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session with a student, I try and understand their individual learning style. Once I have that information, I am able to adapt to the way I approach a subject based on the way they learn best.
