What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that everyone doesn't learn, comprehend and retain information in the same manner. As a result of these differences, I try different approaches for each student.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Determine the initial level of comprehension of each student and build from there.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Give them different ways to visualize the subject using real-life examples.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

With patience and a non-judging attitude.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Explain it to the student in a different manner.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would encourage them to slow down and break the concepts into smaller pieces.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I would let them try to answer/explain the concept and then break it down into smaller pieces.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Show the student how this relates to real life situations.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I'd have the student repeat the concept back to me, and then I would switch the question around to ensure they understand the concept, not just memorized it.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would be a cheerleader.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By asking the student what their level of comprehension is and what they are having trouble with.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I would adapt to the student's needs by altering my approach based on their learning style.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Textbooks and other relevant reading and online sources.
