I am currently a graduate student at Columbia University pursuing my Masters in Public Administration. For the past three years, I have worked at education focused non-profit organizations. During this time, I have worked as a literacy and math tutor for middle school students, as well as led a writing seminar for high school students preparing to go to college. I enjoy working with students of all grade and skill level, and I love to make learning fun!

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is to meet students where they are at, while making material relatable and fun.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a typical first session, I would assess the strengths and weaknesses of the student through activities and problem sets, to create a point in which to start from.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
To encourage independent learning, I believe you must provide resources, but not answers. Through providing the tools to allow students to find the answers themselves, you create self-sufficiency.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would help a student stay motivated through goal setting, and regularly revisit the goals to track our progress towards reaching them.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would work to understand how the student learns most effectively and meet them where they are. I would try to make learning the concept fun, and encourage the student to continue trying.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I believe practice is key. Presenting students with excerpts from different kinds of texts and creating reading exercises will allow the student to feel a greater level of comfort and confidence when reading.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I have found talking to the student to see what their goals and expectations are, along with where they are currently at in learning is very important. I also think finding out their interests outside of the classroom is important to create lessons that are fun and interesting.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Firstly, I would talk to them to discover what they are interested in outside of the classroom. Wherever possible, I would involve these topics to increase their interest in the lesson. I would also create goals with the student so they can feel a sense of empowerment to pursue their goals, increasing their engagement in the sessions.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would create question sets and assessments to judge the student's comprehension. I would also check in with the student before and after each session to see how they are feeling regarding their progress and confidence with the topic.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I believe I can boost a student's confidence through creating attainable goals and reaching them as a team. As a student realizes their potential to learn and grow, increased confidence will come naturally.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I would evaluate students’ needs by first having a consultation with them and their parents to determine their strengths and weaknesses. I would also discuss any goals they have in and out of school. Then I would determine steps going forward, and continue to check in with the student before each session.
