Certified Tutor
I'm currently a graduate student at Georgia Tech. Like you, I believe that seeking help is a key to success. Perhaps certain subjects do not come easily to you. Or maybe you need some extra motivation to put you on the right track. Whatever it is, I was in your same shoes, and I can help. If you give me the opportunity, I will work diligently with you to achieve those academic goals. My tutoring background includes two years of volunteer tutoring in a student-led organization at my undergraduate college. In addition to my experience, you will find me an open and engaging teacher who will challenge you to approach problems in a logical way. As such, I am looking forward to working with you and wish you the best in your academic pursuits!

What is your teaching philosophy?
I favor a teaching philosophy that tackles the method of solving problems as opposed to just finding the answer. Furthermore, I believe that repetition is the best way to hone your problem solving skills. From examples to practice tests, incorporating repetition into problem solving will help you succeed.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
All of us can be timid about meeting someone new! During the first session, I would provide a positive learning environment by introducing myself and my methods of teaching. I would then want the student to express any concern with my methods of teaching, so that we can agree on what is best. Afterwards, the student and I would discuss his or her background knowledge, and we would begin our session.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
For many, learning how to effectively study does not come naturally. Through our tutoring sessions, I hope to provide the foundation for a student's independent learning. While my main method of teaching focuses on example problems, I intend to aid students in recognizing patterns so that they will be able to tackle problems themselves.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Staying motivated can be difficult unless positive reinforcement is present. With that said, I believe that success in a subject will instill a sense of confidence that can motivate students to pursue excellence. Through tutoring, I plan to provide assessments that will gauge a student's understanding. As a student learns from his or her mistakes and shows progress, he or she will likely find the motivation to succeed.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I personally believe that tone can play a tremendous factor in a student's learning. Staying calm and patient is a necessity when a student cannot seem to grasp a concept. With the proper demeanor, the root of the problem can be understood and mitigated in a way that the student feels comfortable and unashamed. Because each student learns differently, I will address the problem in a way that he or she understands.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Personally, reading comprehension has always been a struggle for me, so I can relate to its difficulty. From vocab cards to studying sentence structure, there are multiple methods I have used to augment my reading comprehension performance.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I think a tutor's excitement is one of the most positive tools that increases a student's excitement for a difficult subject. I will strive to present subject material in an excitable and relatable way so that students feel engaged in the subject.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Example problems are my go-to for teaching students. I strongly believe that example problems unveil the process and logic behind challenging problems.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
In my experience, the most successful strategies in tutoring are hinged on the teacher's willingness to help his or her students. Students can recognize when a teacher does not care about their performance, so they will not likely thrive throughout tutoring. I believe that teachers must exhibit motivation and a true desire to help students achieve their goals.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Providing students with a metric of their performance is a great way to build their confidence. As students are able to tackle increasingly harder problems, they will be able to look back at the progress completed.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Evaluating a student's needs start during the first session. After the student and myself feel comfortable working with each other, I will assess the student's proficiency either by going through provided material or by going over example problems that test his or her knowledge.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
In order to meet the needs of the student, a tutor should be willing to adapt. The student's best interests will be initially assessed during the first session, and the tutoring methods will evolve to best suit the student. For example, if a student prefers guidance by working through homework, I would first tackle the issues with homework and then solidify concepts with additional problems.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
During a tutoring session, the student's main concerns will be most important. If issues are focused around homework, then we will work to better his or her understanding on homework problems and procedures. If the student prefers example problems, then we will go through example problems and methods of solving them.
