I am a teacher with a passion for educating the next generation in the biological sciences. I have extensive experience in both biology and education, and want to use those experiences to present fundamental and applicable knowledge to my students. My eight years of teaching experience combined with my eleven years of biology research experience in both field and laboratory settings uniquely qualify me with the ability to present a greater depth and breadth of knowledge. My career goal is to continue to develop my personal understanding in the biological sciences and enable my students to think critically on their own.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I like to spend time getting to know the student a little. It's important to know what the student expects and how they feel about the material they want to learn. From there I like to ask material related questions to assess their understanding. Overall, the first session helps give me an idea of the direction that will best help the student in future sessions.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I like to show my enthusiasm for a subject so that it can rub off on my students. The methods I use to teach include using problem solving for situations that apply to real life and finding metaphors or examples that students can understand. By tailoring my teaching to the student and his/her interests, I can help the student develop self-motivation for learning.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
If one method of teaching doesn't work, it's important to try alternate methods. Sometimes a slightly different approach can make all the difference.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
When I first meet with a student, I take the time to learn about the student and take an assessment of their current understanding. I have found that the best way to determine a student's need is to see how they feel about a subject. Even a great student that has understand can struggle if they don't feel like they are achieving, so it's important to know their perception as well.
What is your teaching philosophy?
I like to focus on confidence building and teaching using what students already understand to improve understanding rather than just rote knowledge. Learning should be enjoyable.
