What is your teaching philosophy?

Learning is useful and people are different. I will explain the material in such a way that it makes sense to the person I am teaching, because we are more likely to remember things that we actually understand.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will get the goals for tutoring and an idea of what material will be covered. Then we will start going over the material.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will notice what methods seem to be most effective with that particular student. Then I can explain how to employ study methods.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Depending on their goals (learn more, better grades, etc.), I point out that they will achieve their goals which will outlast the work put in.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Explain it in a different way. Ask them to explain what they do know. Possibly go back to explain previous concepts on which the current concept may be dependent. Try to tailor how the student learns to the way I am explaining the material.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

If someone can explain something back to me then I know that they understand it. If someone can answer questions that are dependent on an understanding of the material, then they understand the material.
