What is your teaching philosophy?

Teach from the bottom up-- students need to understand 1st principles to solve a complex problem- avoid just simply memorizing equations; emphasize fundamental understanding.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Work with the student to check what fundamental concepts they need assistance in.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Show them the process of learning, from reading to writing and then to solving problems- practice makes perfect.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Continue to remind them how society needs us to advance devices and standards of living; relate learning to real-word applications, and show why it's rewarding and fun to solve challenging problems.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Go back to fundamentals, and check what concept is not being absorbed well in the student's mind.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Teach them to read repetitively and to be active readers.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

A bottom up approach is key, and then the once student gets the fundamental concept, I found learning through examples to be very effective.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Explain how it relates to the real world so they are more motivated.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Check if they can solve a real example, and then explain how they can improve the process of solving it.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Check if they understand the fundamental concept deeply.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Ask them many questions about the topic to check if they really understand it well or not.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Ask questions and assess their understanding of the subject, and then tune the teaching level accordingly.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Textbooks, online material, equations, diagrams.
