What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that learning should be interactive and self-directed. I try to reflect this in my tutoring sessions by breaking down concepts in a simple fashion, and engage the student in the material until the student feels comfortable with the material.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

After spending some time getting acquainted I typically ask the student which subjects they are seeking help with. I follow up with diagnostic questions that explore these areas to make sure I can tailor the tutoring sessions to their needs.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I help students become independent learners by teaching them to become self-directed learners; that is, to be motivated to try to learn the material on their own with each attempt, identify weak areas, and improve them.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I help students stay motivated by moving through course material at their own pace, and challenging them at a level that will still promote time-sensitive progress required by each class, but still at a comfortable pace.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

When students present with a difficulty in understanding the course material, I first ask them to explain it to me in their own words. Then I ask clarification questions to open up these areas of struggle. I follow that with explaining the course material in a simplified manner. After working on this material (practice problems, etc.), I review with the student throughout the session and again at the next session.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I help promote reading comprehension by explaining the words with examples, and expanding on concepts/technical terms in easy-to-understand words.
