Sahil

Certified Tutor

My love for teaching comes from a lifelong love of learning and the desire to enhance my knowledge. As a future medical school student, I know that hard work and dedication are necessary to success. Over the last few years, I have been privileged to tutor lots of students from kindergarten level to college. The most satisfying part has been making the students realize their own potential and see their grades improve.

I tutor in many different subjects such as various levels of math, science, history, English, Test-taking strategies, and writing. I strongly believe that each student has his unique way of learning and it is my responsibility as their tutor to figure it out and prepare my lessons to fit their needs.

I am generally available to tutor in the evenings during the weekdays. Weekends are a bit more flexible. I can travel to students or set up an online session.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping make a difference in your studies!

What is your teaching philosophy?

I strongly believe that each student has his unique way of learning, and it is my responsibility as their tutor to figure it out and prepare my lessons to fit their needs.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would share some of my stories of overcoming challenges.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would be very patient with them and try different methods until they get it.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I try to find a method of teaching that best suits the student, and once I know it, I build my lessons accordingly.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would try to mix things up and make it fun for them.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would try to test them by giving a practice exam.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By gradually increasing the level of difficulty in problems I assign them.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I learn the method of teaching they like and work around it.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I usually use the materials they use in class, and if they don't have anything, I bring my own.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would gradually give the student more and more responsibilities and assignments to do on their own. This would eventually make them an independent learner.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

The main issue with reading comprehension is getting the main idea of the passage. I would have them focus more on the first and last paragraphs. In each paragraph, I would suggest that they focus more on the first and last sentence and write down the gist of the paragraph at the end of each paragraph. Besides this, giving them plenty of practice problems would be the way to improve their reading comprehension.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

In my first session, I would work with the students to find their strengths and weaknesses. Once I have a good understanding of that, I would gauge the way they learn the best.
