What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During a first session with a student I will assess what areas a student is struggling with, and try to get a sense of the way they learn. Each student has a unique learning process, and it's important to figure out their style so that I can find the best way to get the information through to them.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulties with a certain concept, I would find a new approach to teaching them the material. I would try to explain things in a manner they can better relate to, by using different things like visuals or examples.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would work through problems together and show them how to break apart passages to better understand them. I would also try to identify whether their problem is; because they don't understand the vocabulary, or they just need help putting everything together and synthesizing information.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I think it's important to understand some things about the student, like their strengths, weaknesses, and interests. This can help tailor the material and teaching method to each individual student.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would create different problem sets for them to work on, and make sure to include a variety of questions that ask about the material in different ways. I would also have the student explain the material back to me so that I am sure that they have grasped the concept. In my experience, being able to relate information to someone else is a sign that they have fully understood a concept.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I would first ask them to tell me what they are struggling with and why they think they are having problems. Then I would give them an assessment to determine what areas they need help in.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I use different approaches in tutoring for each individual student. Some students learn more through repetition, some are more visual, some learn from watching examples, etc. Depending on what type of student have, I change my teaching style to better fit their learning style.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I like to use practice questions like the ones that will be on their exams. I also like to use resources such as their class materials and supplemental websites. Most of these materials I obtain before the session so that I can be prepared to start with the instruction. I will also ask in the beginning of a session if the student has any specific materials they would like to work on during the session.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated by setting small goals. It's easy for a student to lose confidence or motivation if they feel that they are still way behind or not understanding every concept, but if we set small, obtainable goals together that can be reached every couple of sessions (such as understanding a new concept), the student will feel like they are making progress and stay motivated to keep on working.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would try to put the subject in terms they understand. For example, a sports player could benefit from me teaching Cell Biology in a way that shows each organelle as being a player on the team, and relating the processes by which they interact to sports players in a game. This not only makes the student more interested in the subject they are learning, but it gives them a better understanding of the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I have the student practice different assignments and questions until they have shown understanding of the material. When the see their progress, they usually feel more comfortable with themselves about the subject.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I think every student has a unique way of learning, and therefore material should not be taught a single way. I also believe that students benefit from a patient, understanding tutor who can properly evaluate their needs and work with them individually so that they can learn as much as they can.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by encouraging them to tackle new material with a determined approach and different problem solving/study skills. This can help them succeed later in the course, even without tutoring, and things can be applied to different courses they are learning as well.
