What is your teaching philosophy?

Try to explain difficult concepts in easy to understand English, and show the student when and how to use those concepts.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Remediate to cover concepts that student might not understand, and stress current concepts so that the student will feel more confident for the next class. Try if possible to explain concepts the student will see before our next session.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Help the student to understand how and when to use the different concepts so that they will eventually start to anticipate their use.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Motivate through encouragement and praise.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Break down the concept into individual pieces, and make the student understand each piece to make the whole easier to understand and use.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would help them by having them read short pieces and then have explain what that piece means to them. Also I would, if necessary, teach vocabulary to help them understand the words they are reading.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

1)Listen to the student 2)Review concepts they are weak on but have already covered in class 3)Work out some problems for the student as an example for them

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Confirm that the student understands the rules for material, especially in mathematics.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Give them the background that they need, show the student how to work the problems, then let the student try, and praise the student when they succeed.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I listen to students and watch their faces as I explain material. If you actively listen while explaining information, you can see when a student is lost very quickly. Any glossy looks are a tell that the student has problems in that area that you are tutoring.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

When tutoring math, I use the student’s textbook, any math books that I own, and the internet to find ways to explain the topic in question.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Adapting to the student’s needs involves repeating the lesson until they catch on. This is done by repeating the topic, except demonstrating the topic differently.
