Certified Tutor

I am a student at the Milwaukee School of Engineering in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I am studying Biomedical Engineering and have a strong background and tutor in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics. I enjoy tutoring because I feel it is very rewarding when I help students understand new and tough concepts. With a background in engineering I like to motivate the students by setting up real life examples that they can apply to their everyday lives. I feel applying science and mathematics to your own life makes it more appealing and motivates the student to learn all of the concepts.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to first understand what the student does and does not know. Then I will help teach them the material they do not fully understand. Once the theory or process by the student is understood I will help them through example problems so they can apply what I taught them individually in the future.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During the first meeting I will typically ask the student what their learning style is. Once I have a grasp for their learning style I will try to explain my knowledge in the best way for their own understanding. Then after the first meeting I will ask the student what I did well and what I did poorly so during the next meeting I can improve my teaching style to fit their needs.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Learning to become an independent learner can be taught through a process or self-evaluation. Since everyone learns differently, the way I learn will not match up with all students. I will help guide the student through the work and get a sense for how they learn best. Then once I understand their learning style I can make suggestions on how to study and learn new material.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Learning is tough. The first thing I would do is take one step back and revisit any prerequisite skills needed to learn the particular concept. Then once all the prerequisite skills are understood I would reintroduce the topic. After reintroducing the topic I would walk through how the skill is used and then go through a couple example problems.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

The main technique in science and mathematics is to first teach the student techniques and then go through examples on how to apply the technique together. Once this is complete it is best to then give the student an example problem and see if they can complete the problem on their own.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Building a student's confidence in a subject is a process, but can be done by revisiting the material the student is already proficient at completing. Then I help the student walk through more difficult problems until they can complete them on their own.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

A student's needs are best evaluated by understanding what they struggle with. This can be seen if the student is given a problem without any help and see where they get stuck or see where they make a small mistake. Then I can teach them how to get around the mistakes and understand the material they get stuck on.
