What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in praising children for their efforts, making corrections and then praising them again once that have completed the correction. Positive reinforcement is a must. I break work down into small increments, ensuring that the student understands the process of the smaller section before adding on more work.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Getting to know a student is very important. I will find out the students interests as well as their frustrations to make the best plan possible to move forward.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By breaking work down into smaller sections, students are more likely to feel proud of their accomplishments. I will support students in their efforts, giving feedback at all times and assisting only when necessary.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I will help students stay motivated by using positive reinforcement and gearing lessons towards student interests.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Break it down and do the problem piece by piece, not moving forward until they is total understanding of what we have completed thus far.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would have the student pick out key words and sentences. I will also ask questions periodically to ensure that they understand what they are reading.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Positive reinforcement and creating lessons that revolve around the student's interest.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Find a means in which to incorporate an interest of the students.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Frequent questioning.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By using positive reinforcement.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Asking questions.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Once the needs of the student are established, I will then structure lessons on their level related to the material at hand.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Books, paper, colored pens and markers, props if needed…
