Certified Tutor

Howdy!

I am a second year graduate student at Virginia Tech pursuing my Master's Degree in Civil & Environmental Engineering. I received my bachelor's degree in Meteorology from Texas A&M University, College Station. I like to rock climb, hike, lift weights, read, cook, play video games in my free time.

I have been tutoring since high school and love having the opportunity to help students excel in subjects they need help in. My specialty is math, ranging from Algebra I to Calculus I, and iI am eager to help students achieve. My philosophy of tutoring is learning the basics. Every student learns in their own unique style, and it is my responsibility to make sure to find the way that student learns best. I will work with students to understand the source of thier difficulties, and as a team, identify the new way to help them learn.

I want to help students achieve outstanding performance. Everyone can perform well in science and math, they just need to learn how they learn best. Tutors are meant to help the individual excel, and I guarantee to help make sure my students get the gold in their classes.

What is your teaching philosophy?

That anyone can excel in math and science; it is all about finding the right approach for each student!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Sit down and talk with them a little bit to know them a bit better, and identify what subject areas they want to work on the most.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By teaching a student how to learn new material. It is about showing the student the best way they learn new information, so they can extend that beyond tutoring sessions.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By reminding them how many doors can open in the future if they study hard and excel in school.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Try to slow down and break down the concept into components they understand about individual parts of the subject or material.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

BY trying to help them identify the main themes of the passage, and how to identify the bigger picture. Also, I think ensuring they have a solid base vocabulary would help.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I like to talk about a student’s troubles/ issues first, then identify their goals for improvement. Once that is established, I like to start with core problems to try and see for myself where their confusion may lie. Then, the reworking and learning can take off by developing the right approach for the student.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By helping them to know why they are doing it. Showing what the impacts, benefits, and opportunities mastering the subject can open!

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By developing the right approach to material, so they can see their improvement themselves. Nothing will help them like performing properly, and the best way to do that is in depth work

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By talking to them initially to see what they think the problems are. Then, I like to do step by step tutoring and working through problems to see where the potential issue may lie.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I try and make the session a conversation. Based off of where we think they need to strengthen their abilities, I then work with the student to set things up for success.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Preferably the student’s problem sets, but I will also look for additional materials online, and reach out to friends in teaching as well.
