Gabriela

Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of the University of Miami. I received my Bachelors of Science in Microbiology and Immunology with minors in Chemistry and Public Health. Since graduation, I've had the opportunity to tutor both middle and high school students. I am passionate about teaching because of the crucial importance education plays in one's life. I will be starting medical school in 2016 and I am looking forward to helping students during my gap year. As a tutor, I am very attentive to the needs of my students and I always make sure they have a thorough understanding of the material being covered. Personally, I enjoy the Socratic method of teaching because it allows me to gauge how much the student knows as well as assess where the gaps in knowledge need to be filled. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, going to the gym, and dancing.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would ask the student which topics they need to cover and where are they experiencing difficulties with the material. In doing so, I can address those topics as well as encourage the student to answer questions themselves.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would help a student become an independent learner by motivating them to ask questions while learning. In doing so, the student will be spurred to find answers to their questions as part of active learning.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated by relating material to their interests. By forming a personal relationship with my students, I encourage them to stay focused by keeping them entertained while learning.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student is having difficulty with a skill, I would try to determine where the gaps in the students' knowledge lies and then address those gaps. Furthermore, I would use multiple ways to teach the concept in the hopes that one will be understood by the student.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

If I am working with a student long term, I like to first make a schedule so we can best allocate the time. Next, I assess the student's strengths and weaknesses and interests. This allows me to tutor specifically to the areas where the student needs extra help.
