Jorgelina

Certified Tutor

I have nine years of experience teaching in the bilingual classroom. I have taught three different grade levels: pre-K, first grade, and third grade. I have implemented two different bilingual programs, "Regular Bilingual Classroom" and "Two-Way Dual Language." I have worked with students who functioned below, on, and above grade level. I have been very successful at meeting diverse students' needs by facilitating different learning strategies, offering individualized support, encouraging critical thinking, and integrating a variety of resources.

Teaching in a bilingual classroom is challenging and motivating for any educator. Bilingual students are in need of special care and attention in the learning process throughout the year. Although some learners might have strong linguistic skills in their native language, they may have deficiencies in their second language; it is the task of the teacher to help guide the student through this learning process.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that every child has the potential to bring something unique and special to our society. I will help children to develop their potential by believing in them as capable individuals. I will assist children in discovering who they are, so they can express their own opinions and nurture their own ideas. I have a vision of a world where people respect and accept the differences between us, as this is the core of what makes life so fascinating.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will introduce myself and focus on trying to know the student. I will ask about his\her interests and expectations. Then, I will make sure that he\she knows that everything will be OK.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will first work on his strengths to help the student build his\her self-confidence. Then, I will guide the student to take action over his\her work and provide support as the student develops.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I will always make sure to give positive feedback to the student. I will set reachable goals, since giving a student a challenge is always a great way to keep them motivated. I will have a reward system based on the student's interests.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will reteach the concept by using different strategies, hands-on activities, and manipulatives to build up the student's needs.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I will first evaluate how the student is reading and identify the specific skills that he or she is missing or struggling with. Then, I will provide the student with different strategies to use to develop those skills.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Reading: Picture walk to start bringing the previous knowledge that the student may have. Make predictions based on visible text features. Engage in activities to develop vocabulary. Identify the main idea from each paragraph. Make connections. Math: Strategies include visuals, manipulatives, identification of keywords, and real life connections.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I will have the student start working at his\her independent level to build up self-confidence. Then, little by little, I will move up to his\her instructional level to ensure progress.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

For example, if we are working on a math problem, I will model using different strategies to solve the problem. I will show the student how to identify keywords to understand the problem. I will also teach the student to detect what is important from the problem in order to solve the problem.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By always using positive feedback and by starting to work at the student's independent level first.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

The best way to evaluate a student is by looking at the student's actual work. Another way is by using pre- and post-tests to identify the student's progress and evaluate their needs.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Once I have identified the student's needs, I will develop a lesson plan based on reachable learning goals.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Manipulatives, pictures, hands-on activities, technology, visuals, and real world connections.
