Certified Tutor
I am a recent graduate from Wellesley College where I majored in biological sciences. I'm an aspiring dentist and I'm taking a gap year between college and grad school. While my research and concentration ranges from creative writing to biology, I am most comfortable with tutoring SAT math and AP biology. I have always done quite well on tests for these two subjects, and I love helping people prepare for them!
Additionally, I have a strong background in French, and am more than happy to tutor elementary to intermediate French! I am also studying biochemistry and microbiology right now, and I'm doing well in them.
I've tutored voluntarily for years, and I've learned many tricks along the way to help students stay motivated and organized. My tutoring philosophy is that everyone has their own way of learning, and that no one way is better or worse than any other. The only correct solution is the one that helps the student learn the material in the simplest possible manner.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is that everyone has their own way of learning and that there is no certain way that makes a person more or less intelligent. The only correct solution is the one that helps the student learn the material in the fastest and easiest manner. It could be flashcards, visual-aid, drawing, reading, doing practice problems repeatedly, or even watching movies.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
For the first session, I like to get to know where the student is in terms of his/her studies. We start with homework usually, and then go from there. I also like to know the students' goals at school.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I show the students all kinds of techniques of studying. My favorite is flashcards.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I like to be encouraging and give positive reinforcement. I also like to mention the end goals every now and then to help them stay focused, as well as the reasons they're studying. I also like to use humor sometimes.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I will try to explain the concept in different ways. Usually, writing my explanation out or using drawings or diagrams works well.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
For reading comprehension, I would help them by writing key notes along the way, and make sure they understand the story before moving further.
