Brantley

Certified Tutor

I am a Baton Rouge native who recently graduated from LSU with a BS in Biology and a minor in French. I have two years of experience tutoring upper level biology courses at LSU as well a year of tutoring high school students in French language and chemistry. My philosophy on tutoring is simple: adapt to the student. Every student is unique in how they learn and what their objectives are for the tutoring sessions, so I do my best to adapt to these varying conditions. One of the greatest joys of being a tutor is watching students succeed, and it is for this reason that I am driven to help students in Austin with the often difficult but rewarding task of doing well in school.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I think that every student is unique, so it's my job as a tutor to work to find what works the best for the individual, and adapt my teaching to their needs and personality. I like to be flexible in my teaching style, so that every student I tutor maximizes what they get out of the tutoring session.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get to know the student first, then figure out what their academic goals are and how I can help them achieve these goals.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I think encouraging students to see subjects in a different perspective will often motivate them to work hard in school and succeed. For example, cell biology isn't very interesting or cool in itself - that is, until you see how understanding the cellular mechanisms and pathways lead to treating cancer and saving the lives of friends and family. Perspective matters.
