In a first session with a student, I would get to know the student. I want to know their likes and dislikes and find out where they are academically. I will ask the student what they typically like about a subject and what they dislike about a subject. The more that I know about the student, the better I can accommodate to their educational needs.

In the past, if I really want to check for a student's understanding, I will ask the student to explain the concept to me in their own words. If they can do this, then I know that they have a complete understanding.

Practice. The more a student practices a concept in a subject, the more confident they will become.

My teaching philosophy is to gain respect from my students by showing them respect. I want my students to trust me because without trust and respect, no educating can really be accomplished. It is my responsibility as the tutor to find ways to help the students understand the material; they need to feel comfortable that the ways I'm teaching them are going to work.

I can help a student become an independent learner by showing them study tips and how to read for understanding. I can show them how to skim over a paragraph and pick out the important words or sentences. I can also show the students proper ways to take notes.

I will help a student stay motivated by relating what they are learning to a current interest that they have. If a student can relate to the topic or can link it with some previous knowledge or experience, it will help them stay motivated.

I will use all learning techniques possible to help a student grasp a concept. I like to use visuals when I teach, because they give the student a different perspective of the skill or concept.

I help students who are struggling with reading comprehension by breaking down the reading into short sections. I encourage the students to take notes when reading or underline some portions that they think might be important. I also like to have the students try to relate to the reading, either by putting themselves in the shoes of the character or linking previous knowledge about the topic.

I will try to find some fun videos or games that could help reengage the student's interest about the topic. By learning the student's likes and dislikes, I can better assist with the engagement level of the student.

I evaluate students needs by looking over their past work, if available. This gives me an idea of where they are making their mistakes. I also evaluate during every session, and as I get to know the student.

I adapt my tutoring in any way that increases the learning ability of my student. If my student needs more individual attention, then I will provide that. If they have the ability to problem solve on their own, then I will wait longer before jumping in to help.

I typically use whatever materials are provided via the student's school. I use past homework and tests to review and correct. If necessary, I can print off materials for the needed subject.
