Certified Tutor

I am an experienced teacher who taught at a private Christian school for 25 years. I tutored students during the school year and the summer. I love working with children. It is exciting to me when a child gets something he/she did not understand before. I like to build a relationship with each student and find out what type of learner he/she is and use methods which will help a child succeed.
I believe that a student is not going to be motivated unless he or she is connected with the material. I try to find their interest and strengths and help them make those connections. I like getting to really know my students so I can get to know what kind of learners they are. I plan on what fits my students best.
Learning should be fun!

What is your teaching philosophy?

A teacher is a role model, and it is his/her responsibility to help students desire to become lifelong learners. Teachers need to be flexible and sensitive to each child's learning strengths and weaknesses and use proven methods to help each child succeed.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would talk with them and find out their interests. What do they like to learn in school? What would they like to learn? I would possibility do some assessment.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Show him/her methods that may help, including organizational and study skills.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I may use a goal-setting chart or activities. I would use hands-on activities.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to use various methods to find something that works. Engaging a student and using hands-on activities can work.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I teach children how to find keywords in passages. I use visual aids.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I find building a relationship with the child key. Engaging a child with concrete manipulatives and using their interests helps.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Find a way to use what he/she is interested in to engage him/her.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would have him/her explain or model what has been learned. Manipulatives might be used.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I set goals. I use encouraging words and celebrate successes.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I talk with the parents and the student. I test as needed.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I find out what the student's needs are. I adapt based on what type of learner he/she is. Is the student a visual, auditory, kinesthetic or oral learner?

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use cards, pictures, manipulatives, a tablet or whatever I find can work for a student.
