I've been teaching elementary and middle school math for 21 years. You know the old saying "There's more than one way to skin a cat." Well, there's more than one way to do math. Did you know that there are at least 5 different ways to multiply and divide whole numbers? Do you know why the volume formula is V=Bh? Did you know that there are 4 ways to solve a proportion? Did you know that 'flip and multiply' is not the true mathematical way to divide fractions but instead is a 'trick'?
Because I have taught kids at all grade levels and ability levels, I can teach you the same concept several different ways and let you choose the way that you makes sense to you. I firmly believe in understanding conceptually before learning mathematically. Having a conceptual understanding helps you understand the process needed to learn mathematically. STAAR isn't about the right answer anymore; it's about the process you use to get the answer. If you can understand the process for solving a problem, then you can take that knowledge and apply it to different scenarios.
