Being a graduate of Louisiana State University, I consider myself a well-educated person since I received three degrees in the field of Petroleum Engineering: (1) Bachelor of Science, (2) Masters of Science, and (3) Doctorate of Philosophy. Since graduation, I acquired 25-plus years of collective work experience and increasing expertise, responsibility, and achievements with major energy companies (Exxon, Chevron, Conoco, etc.), the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Beginning in 1996, I decided to use my engineering abilities and talents to tutor either as a freelance tutor or independent contractor for a tutoring services business. Inspiration to tutor came about after the million man march with me self-consciously thinking how I can help further educate the American youth in the sciences and mathematics.
Since 1996, I have served the Atlanta metropolitan area (i.e., mostly in Clayton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, and South Fulton) as a tutor in the general school subject of mathematics. Moreover, I have extensive knowledge in a broad/wide range of mathematical subjects that include the following: (1) Elementary and Middle School Math/Arithmetic (2) Pre-Algebra and Algebra, (3) Geometry, (4) Trigonometry, (5) Pre-Calculus/Introductory Calculus, and (6) Statistics. During the last two decades, my individualized tutoring/instruction has ranged widely from the lower elementary level (3rd Grade) to College/Adult students. Furthermore, I also tutored the school subjects of physics and chemistry sporadically, which are mathematically intensive as well.
I feel there are several factors that makes a great tutor, including but not limited to an excited/enjoyable attitude, dedication, great enthusiasm, extensive knowledge of the subject matter, understandable dialogue, etc. The most important aspect, though, is doing whatever it takes, while making the utmost attempt, to ensure that the student is learning and retaining the subject matter. Sometimes this may mean using several approaches and perhaps changing over from one approach to another even in the same tutoring session. Another important factor is being a firm proponent of education, especially motivated to me by my family, who believed it was an absolute necessity for an improved quality of life, which I try to impart to all of my students.
In my spare time, I enjoy keeping up/reading about current events, which helps me to become more informed about the socio-economic and political dynamics of the country. Moreover, I enjoy walking, playing tennis, and getting out for weekend getaways/vacations that are linked to travel packages for cruises, sporting events, and local festivals. Recently however, I especially started keeping more pace with the technological advances in personal computing to help advance my career in data/statistical analysis.
