Certified Tutor

I earned my Bachelor's of Science degree from the University of Baltimore in Real Estate and Economic Development. I am currently working towards my Master's degree in Real Estate Development at Arizona State University. I believe that organization, effort, and patience are the keys to success. Since a child I have been at ease with mathematics which has fueled my interest in business. My unique educational experience and work history have provided me with a solid foundation in financial analysis, cost management, and advanced Microsoft Excel valuation skills. I approach teaching with the same methods I use in daily life; assertive communication, mastering fundamental principles, and connecting lessons to real world examples. Outside of the classroom and boardroom I enjoy gardening and collecting vinyl.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I hear, and I forget. I see, and I remember. I do, and I understand.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Brainstorm, set goals, and outline learning objectives.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Provide them tools and methods to increase critical thinking. Show them how to set goals and create a plan of action.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Hone in on the student's learning preference (visual, logical, oral), and then create activities that will assist in developing that skill or understanding the concepts.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

With comprehension and questions, graphic organization(diagram tools that show text structure), and guided practice.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The most successful way to start work with a student is to establish the needed working materials, set a realistic learning goal, outline a learning plan, and identify the student's learning strengths and weaknesses.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Identify what they are most excited about and relate the subject that is a challenge to the student's strength. For example: If I have a visually creative student that is struggling with math or English, I would use graphic organizers or flashcards to engage the student's creative side while teaching them math or English.
