What's covered on the MCAT?

The MCAT is a four-part exam that focuses on a number of different topics that are key to finding success in the medical school environment. The exam is required in the application process for most U.S.-based medical schools, so you'll almost definitely need to take it if you want to become a practicing physician. You'll take the MCAT on a computer and will earn a score ranging from 118 to 132 for each section you complete. You'll also earn a total combined score based on the results of each of the test's four sections. This score can range from 472 to 528.

The first part of the MCAT is called Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems. Here, you'll be asked to answer 59 questions within a 95-minute time limit. Biology and chemistry are some of the key subjects that are tested in this section. The overall focus of the section is on things like the chemical and physical principles that drive the mechanisms that operate in the human body.

Next, you'll also complete the Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills section of the MCAT. This test section is a little different from the others on the MCAT in that you don't need any pre-existing knowledge for it. Instead, you'll be tested on things like your verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, and analytical skills. You'll be tasked with reading a series of written passages and then answering 5 to 7 questions on each of them. Although you don't need any pre-existing knowledge for this section, it is worthwhile to spend some time learning about the section's format and practicing the type of questions that you'll encounter on it. This is something 51Թ can help you learn.

The next MCAT section is called Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems. For this part of the exam, you'll want to have a strong understanding of subjects like general and organic chemistry as well as basic biochemistry and introductory biology. The focus of this section is on the processes that are unique to living organisms, biological and biochemical concepts, and scientific reasoning skills, among other things.

Finally, the last part of the MCAT is called Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior. The purpose of this part of the exam is to assess the skills that you'll need to treat a diverse population of patients when working as a physician. The section features questions about the impact behavior has on health, mental health issues, and social issues that are important in the field of medicine. This section features 59 questions and has a time limit of 95 minutes.
