Tutoring review by Bishoy in Independence, KS
We went over home school lesson on equations today, specifically identifying base and power, and working with fractions raised to a power. We paused and clarified concepts in the lesson along the way. We also went over 10 practice problems and a 10-question quiz, for a total of 20 questions completed today. Overall the student is progressing since last time, and has an easier time transitioning from one step to another in solving multi-step problems. There was a pattern of mistakenly multiplying a number by the power instead of raising that number to that power and resolving the problem from there. This was apparent mostly with fractions. However he has no trouble with the concept itself, and with practice he got better. I had him write out every step and when resolving fractions raised to a power I had him pause and write it with the numerator and denominator raised to that power and then solve the problem from there. This seemed to help. He did very well otherwise on the practice questions and quiz, getting all of them correct. My other recommendation is to use a timer with subsequent breaks if he gets anxious about starting a lesson.

Today we worked on a volume of various 3D shapes, such as cylinders, rectangular prisms, cubes, and cones. It is important for any formulas that involve exponents for the student to do the exponents first so she doesn't accidentally square too many figures or solve for exponents too many times. We are waiting to hear back from her teacher on which concepts she needs extra help on.

Tutoring review by Melinda in Independence, KS
Today we went over example problems from chapter 11 from her textbook. We began with 11-1 and did a few problems from each until 11-6, which we will begin with on Saturday. I mostly walked her through some of the example problems that the textbook provided. Overall the session went well, there were a few problems that she did not know how to do but was able to figure them out once I explained them to her. I mentioned that she should check out a website which has good explanations of probability problems as well as videos for other facets of Algebra II. I also recommended that she do practice problems in the textbook, specifically the end chapter tests. Next session we will begin with 11-6 and move on to chapter 12.

They have asked me to focus on everyday topics to increase communication skills, vocabulary and understanding of American culture. Over the next few weeks we will choose a certain topic, and spend our class time talking about it, incorporating new terms and improving pronunciation. Today's topic was on food and eating habits.

Today, a significant time was spent on logs and trigonometry. The student is still getting used to logs and the laws of trigonometry. There are only four sections left to cover. He is building his skills, both algebraically and with the calculator. He has demonstrated he can quickly pick up the new material, and there is still sufficient time to practice the new material before the test. The next main focus point will be time; it takes him more than one minute per question. By next week, he should finish the topics and the diagnosis test. Then, we can begin test taking skills and the speed component of the test.

Today, we reviewed the different organelles of the cell and what the function of each one was. It took some time, but by the end of the session, she seemed to have all of it down pretty well. We also went over her math homework and made sure that she was understanding all of the concepts covered.
