Certified Tutor

I have my Bachelor's Degree from Shepherd University in English Education and have completed Master's work in English through George Mason University. I helped start and was the founding tutor in Shepherd University's Writing Center and worked as a research assistant for a professor on her book. I have taught English/Language Arts in both middle and high school. I am very passionate about both reading and writing. I have taught theatre, ELA, career investigations, and journalism and helped develop a student led news program. I have also taught Classical Education which included intense studies in Shakespeare, Latin, and philosophy. I enjoy discussing literature with students and encouraging them to engage with literature and noting the larger elements which bring us to a greater understanding such as symbols, characterization, and overriding theme. I am probably most passionate about meeting students where they are in their writing and helping them better communicate their ideas to their audience. I specialize in helping students develop thesis and supporting their thesis statements using critical thinking and creating a strong, solid essay.
I also enjoy working with youget students as they develop reading skills and promoting a love of reading by establishing a strong foundation.
The average pass rate of my students in the reading SOL is 96% with and average 10% receiving pass advanced.
