...variety of settings; from one-on-one tutoring to review sessions for 300 people in a lecture hall. I primarily tutor MCAT, SAT, and the SAT. In my experience, rather than the Tutor being an all-knowing power who lectures on the information, the most beneficial environment for the student is one that feels like a conversation. By creating a dynamic atmosphere between Tutor and student, the student will be able to truly understand the material. Constant collaboration...

Eleven years of classroom teaching and several years of tutoring has shown me that learning has so much to do with confidence. Let's build your confidence while we build your skills so that tomorrow will become easier than today! ... My plans for the first session would be to complete a "getting to know you activity" with the student and complete assessments with the student. I would also like to see any assessments the school may have done as well as some examples of classwork and homework. These items will help me to gauge where skill deficiencies and strengths may be, and also see what the expectations of the student's teacher are.

...things in my life have changed. One that has not is my conviction to teach. Over the past twenty years I have taught in a variety of countries, in many different grade levels and subject areas. These teaching opportunities have broadened my knowledge and strengthened my craft. I like to create personalized learning opportunities for my students that will not only be engaging, but also support their learning and build their confidence.... I believe that it is key to challenge students in order for them to grow to their full potential. Tutoring allows for different teaching opportunities because, most often, it is one-to-one. From my educational experiences, I know how valuable teacher encouragement and motivation is for personal motivation. I intend to motivate students while teaching them to be intrinsically motivated through challenging, yet supportive lessons and assignments. I will use a variety of instructional strategies including direct instruction, questioning techniques, and collaborative learning, when possible.
