I'm a student of philosophy at Haverford College, and I've been tutoring for between one and two years. I'm a tutor in technical writing, many different fields of mathematics ranging from calculus to pre-algebra, and in German. I also tutor students to success in the ACT.
My higher-education began at Indiana University, where I received high marks in my study areas, including for a lengthy thesis in the field of personal identity. I am studied in the fields of ethics, logic, metaphysics, and transcendentalism.
As a student of philosophy, my tutoring style emphasizes concise, effective, and simple communication to both convey complex concepts to my students, and meld my students' writing styles around the tenants of simple expression.
My tutoring approach involves mastering fundamental principles before traversing into complex territory. For students struggling in writing, this approach leads me to emphasize essential elements, including structure, style, and argumentation, before focusing in on hyper-specific problems. In mathematics and for the ACT, this means identifying core problem areas, and taking a far-away look at those issues in order to relearn the core concepts that my students may be struggling with.
I place a lot of trust in my students to tell me where they are struggling, and how I can help them. This means that my lesson plans are a conversation -- the learning objectives are designed to target specific issues that me and my students identify together.
My favorite subject to tutor is symbolic logic. I love seeing that "ah-ha!" moment, when my students begin to intuitively grasp the underlying structures that were previously challenging. More widely, it is those moments that make me passionate about learning and teaching.
