I am very happy with our experience so far with 51Թ. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I have a ph.d in education from the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill. I also hold a MS in Special Educatoin from Hunter College and a Bachelors in economics from the University of California, Berkeley. After completing my BA I taught various high school subjects in NYC--primarily English but also history and AP economics. As a teacher, I was nominated and accepted as a Learning Partners Program Model Teacher. I have tutored a variety of subjects although I particularly love English, writing skills, and Algebra. I love taking a skill and breaking it down to its component parts and helping students figure out where the gaps are in their comprehension. One of my proudest accomplishments was teaching an algebra Regents repeater class for those who failed the test multiple times. I worked extensively with students to identify where they were struggling and remediating those areas (one example: I learned a student didn't actually understand how negative numbers operated and so they were constantly tripping up in arithmetic). We achieved about a 90% pass rate in the course and a few students were able to graduate after passing since the math regents were holding them up. I believe in teaching students the skills they need to work independently. My motto is "if students can, they will" with the corollary "if they can't, it's my job to teach them how." I firmly believe there are no "bad" students, just students who haven't received the supports they need to be successful. I provide the skills and then challenge students to achieve more than they might have thought possible.
