Flora
Certified Tutor
I graduated cum laude from Whitman College in May of 2016, with a B.A. in Psychology and Philosophy. I completed honors theses in two fields, educational psychology and philosophy of education, and received the Soper Prize in Philosophy, which is awarded annually to the departments strongest graduating senior.
I bring 10 years of tutoring experience. Most recently and substantially, I worked in 2016-2017 as the Writing Support Specialist for Whitman Colleges Academic Resource Center and Disability Support Services. In this position, I provided individualized tutoring and academic coaching to a diverse group of Whitman students, especially to students with documented learning disabilities, including ADHD, dyslexia, and visual processing disorders. I developed warm, trusting relationships with all of my students as I supported them in identifying and working toward their goals over the course of the academic year. I have also tutored privately and mentored elementary school students, volunteered in elementary school and adult ESL classrooms, worked as a copy editor for Whitman Colleges student newspaper, and informally served as go-to sounding board and writing editor for friends and peers.
I utilize knowledge of educational psychology to adapt my tutoring to students specific learning styles and challenges. I am well-versed in processing, attention, and text-based disorders; learning styles and teaching strategies; cognitive mechanisms involved in learning; and strategies for effective communication.
I welcome students who seek an effective, supportive, enriching, and fun tutoring experience. I enthusiastically help elementary students form study skills for life, high school students crack the SAT, and college students master writing and test taking.
