What is your teaching philosophy?
Apply various methods of explanation until finding the one most meaningful to the student.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Find out where they are in the understanding of the subject matter.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Help them to: 1. Determine what the problem is asking, i.e. what they need to solve it. 2. Learn how to find the information/techniques they need to apply in solving the problem.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Break the learning/problem into "successful steps", i.e. small enough steps that they can handle (for their level of understanding), and experience success at solving.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Break up the skill or concept into its component parts (explaining at their level), making sure they understand each part. Then show them how the parts fit logically together.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Show them how to use a dictionary (real or online) when they come to a word they don't know the meaning of.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Find out where they are at in their current understanding with the problem. See what approaches they've tried and why they tried them.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Find out what their interests/hobbies are, and show them how the subject could help them understand/enjoy their interest/hobby more.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Frequent asking/checking to see if they understand the subject matter up to this point. Short problems / exercises / quizzes might be appropriate.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
With small, incremental successes. Frequent "look backs" to show them how they've progressed.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Find out where their weak points are in their understanding and application of the subject matter. This can be done with conversation/questioning or with simple quizzes.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Be flexible. Try different approaches at explaining the subject matter. Find out which approach seems to make the best sense to them.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
For math, drawings and examples.
