I have studied science and math for 12 years (high school, undergraduate, medical). I am a former doctor who left medicine to start a business in healthcare innovation. I enjoy tutoring very much in addition to my business and my schedule is very flexible.
I have worked with children and adults of all ages, and find that the key to learning is making the material relatable to the student. Each student learns in his or her own way, thus the tutoring must be tailored specifically for each student.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that each student learns in their own way and at their own pace. It is important to tailor each lesson to the individual student and their needs.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In the first session, I want to get to know the student and his or her learning style. I want to know where they are currently at in their knowledge base. Furthermore, I want to establish a connection based on mutual interests such as hobbies and find ways that we can relate.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I don't simply "teach" the material. I want my students to fully understand what they are learning and gain the ability to work independently thereafter.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would keep a positive environment with solid feedback and encouragement. I also give detailed homework assignments and planning to increase motivation and productivity.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I break down the subject into something the student can relate to so that they better understand. Sports, movies, pop culture, and other fun interests the student might have can assist in understanding concepts that might seem mundane or uninteresting.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I struggled with reading comprehension as a child myself and have developed specific techniques to combat this and excel at comprehension.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Getting to know the student works best. Understanding their interests and learning style is vital.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would draw parallels to something they are passionate in. It could be art, music, science, culture, or sports. Anything.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I ask the student to explain the subject to me in their own words and through analogies. This makes sure they understand the concepts. I also work with them on practice exams to confirm they are answering correctly.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Through success on practice exams, my students gain confidence in their mastery of the subject.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I speak with the parents and student directly on certain needs. Then, I do my own evaluation based on the knowledge the student currently possesses.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I create a specific plan for the student based on their needs. For example, when working with students with ADHD, I give them very detailed plans and methods that help them stay on task and focused.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I use the given course materials in addition to study guides and practice exams that I bring with me.
