Certified Tutor
I am a proud graduate of Miami University for my bachelor's degree and the University of South Florida for my master's degree in teaching. I am certified in secondary science education in both Illinois and Florida and also hold my gifted endorsement in Florida. I am passionate about tutoring in biology and environmental science, as well as helping to prepare students to take the science section of the ACT. I help my students make relevant and meaningful connections to help increase engagement and retention. I provide a wide variety of teaching strategies in order to accommodate different learning styles. I have worked with middle and high school students in both formal and informal education for over ten years. Outside of education, I love to travel (I traveled abroad with students in 2012, 2013, and 2014). I enjoy photography and stand up paddleboarding during the summer.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My educational philosophy is to facilitate learning through inquiry-based instruction. I want to engage all learners in meaningful scientific practices and help them find relevant connections to the world around them. Science literacy and an integrated use of technology are of utmost importance in order to build productive 21st-century skilled members of society.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would typically administer a short, diagnostic test to determine the student's strengths and weaknesses. I would try to get an idea of the student's interests in order to get to know the student and build rapport.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can help a student become an independent learner by providing them with strategies for the organization of content and materials as well as helping them build skills to ask better questions and increase critical thinking and problem-solving.
